Homemade Whipped Essential Oil Coconut Oil Body Butter

Posted on March 2016 | Labels: Beauty

If you've never made your own body butter, you're in for a treat. This whipped body butter is incredibly luxurious—it feels like something you'd pay $30 for at a high-end spa. But you can make it at home for a fraction of the cost.

The combination of coconut oil and shea butter creates a rich, deeply moisturizing base, while the essential oils add both fragrance and therapeutic benefits. I use this body butter every day after my shower, and my skin has never been softer.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shea butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup sweet almond oil
  • 15 drops essential oil blend (I use 7 lavender, 5 geranium, 3 ylang ylang)
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil

Instructions

  1. Using a double boiler, gently melt the shea butter and coconut oil.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the sweet almond oil and vitamin E oil.
  3. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for 30-45 minutes until the mixture is semi-solid but still soft.
  4. Using a hand mixer, whip the mixture on medium-high for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  5. Add your essential oils and whip for another 30 seconds.
  6. Transfer to a glass jar and store in a cool place.

Tips

Geranium and ylang ylang create a beautiful floral blend that's perfect for a body butter, but you can customize the essential oils to your preference. Peppermint and eucalyptus make a great energizing morning body butter, while lavender and chamomile are perfect for nighttime. The whipping process is what gives body butter its luxurious texture—don't skip it or rush it. If your house is very warm, the coconut oil may separate; just give it a quick re-whip.
