Homemade Tiki Torch Fuel to Keep Bugs Away

Posted on July 11, 2015 | Labels: Cleaning

Nothing ruins a backyard evening faster than mosquitoes. We used to go through bottles of commercial bug spray and still end up with bites. Then I discovered that you can make your own tiki torch fuel infused with bug-repelling essential oils, and it changed everything.

Now our summer evenings are bite-free and they smell amazing too. The citronella and eucalyptus oils in this fuel naturally repel mosquitoes, while the torch adds a warm ambiance that makes any backyard feel like a tropical retreat.

Ingredients

  • 16 oz lamp oil or liquid paraffin
  • 20 drops citronella essential oil
  • 15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
  • Empty tiki torch fuel bottle or mason jar
  • Tiki torches with wicks

Instructions

  1. Start with a clean, dry bottle. If you're reusing an old tiki torch fuel bottle, make sure it's completely empty and rinsed.
  2. Pour the lamp oil or liquid paraffin into your bottle, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
  3. Add the citronella, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and lavender essential oils.
  4. Cap the bottle and shake gently to combine. The oils will disperse throughout the fuel.
  5. Fill your tiki torches as you normally would, and let the wick soak for at least 30 minutes before lighting.
  6. Light and enjoy a bug-free evening.

Tips

Citronella is the classic mosquito repellent, but eucalyptus is actually just as effective according to several studies. Lemongrass adds an extra layer of protection and a pleasant citrus scent. Never use these essential oils directly on skin—they need to be dispersed in the fuel. If you have pets, make sure the torches are placed where they can't be knocked over, and avoid using tea tree oil in your fuel as it can be toxic to dogs and cats.
