How to Use Essential Oils for Pets

If you didn't know you could be using essential oils for your pets, they can reap the amazing benefits from essential oils just like you! Just make sure to read below to find out how to use essential oils for your pets properly. Not all essential oils are safe for your furbaby!

I have created a list below to help guide you with starting to use oils on your pets. I did also include some essential oils that are not pet-friendly. When you use essential oils you do have to be aware. Some essential oils can be toxic to pets, just like young children.

I always make note to talk to your vet before using essential oils. It is better to play it safe. Most of the time you would use essential oils to help your pet with flea control, arthritis, scars, skin issues, strains, bruises, and so on. One thing you need to do is make sure to dilute the essential oils heavily.

Safe Essential Oils for Dogs

  • **Lavender:** Calming, anxiety relief, skin issues
  • **Frankincense:** Immune support, reduces inflammation
  • **Chamomile:** Relaxation, soothing skin
  • **Ginger:** Digestive support, motion sickness
  • **Helichrysum:** Skin healing, nerve support

Essential Oils to AVOID for Pets

  • **Tea Tree:** Toxic to dogs and cats
  • **Eucalyptus:** Toxic to dogs and cats
  • **Citrus oils (limonene):** Toxic to cats
  • **Pennyroyal:** Highly toxic
  • **Pine oils:** Toxic to cats
  • **Clove:** Toxic to dogs and cats

How to Apply

  1. **Topically:** Dilute heavily with a carrier oil (coconut oil or olive oil). Apply to paws, behind ears, or on the area of concern.
  2. **Diffusing:** Add a few drops to a diffuser in a well-ventilated room. Make sure your pet can leave the room if they want to.
  3. **Never apply essential oils directly to your pet without dilution.**

Tips

Always start with a very small amount and observe your pet for any adverse reactions. Cats are more sensitive to essential oils than dogs, so extra caution is needed. Never use essential oils on puppies or kittens under 12 weeks old. If your pet has a medical condition or is on medication, consult your vet before using any essential oils.
